Summer Clerk Programme

Every summer we open our doors to one or two law students and give them the opportunity to be employed with us in a hands-on capacity and gain some experience in the 'real world'.  We tend to give preference to students who are in their final year.

The programme benefits everyone involved; the students get a taste of the career ahead of them, and we get to enjoy the fresh thinking of our new graduates...

Summer clerking at Mackenzie Elvin is an experience not to be forgotten. The staff are genuinely nice, the cases interesting and the work stimulating. I mainly worked with the family law team who allowed me to assist with a variety of work. Some of the highlights include attending court and seeing those I worked with in action; observing a client interview; meeting with a judge; drafting an affidavit; and researching some fascinating legal issues. The people at Mackenzie Elvin are extremely knowledgeable but also willing to take the time to answer any questions you have. I would recommend Mackenzie Elvin to anyone considering where to summer clerk. I can only hope the firm I end up working for is half as nice.
Carissa Cross, Summer Clerk 2010
Summer Clerking at Mackenzie Elvin has been an invaluable experience. Seeing the day to day operation of the firm has given me a taste of what working in the legal profession is like and has given me focus for the future.

I worked mainly in the commercial team and enjoyed the hands on approach and varied work I was able to have. I had the opportunity to get involved in other areas of practice and was able to sit in on a Judicial Settlement Conference and a Family Court hearing. The people at Mackenzie Elvin were more than welcoming and the firm has a fantastic culture. It was an opportunity that I wouldn’t hesitate to take again and that I am grateful to have had.
Peter Grigor, Summer Clerk 2009

Doing a summer clerkship with Mackenzie-Elvin has given me a huge insight into life within the legal profession. It has been an opportunity to not only put into practice some of the things I have learnt at University, but to learn from some brilliant lawyers and teachers. I will return to my studies with a new perspective and drive, as well as a better idea of what I want in my future career.
Rochelle Haden, Summer Clerk 2008
I was employed as a Summer Clerk at Mackenzie Elvin from November 2007 until February 2008. I worked in Graeme Elvin’s commercial team on a wide range of matters including: residential property transactions, trust and company structuring, Maori land issues, a small claims dispute and employment law matters. As part of this I attended client meetings, an employment mediation and a hearing in the Maori Land Court.

The firm has a friendly, welcoming and inclusive culture. Social functions pre-Christmas make for a busy, but enjoyable lead up to the holiday period.

Summer clerking at Mackenzie Elvin is challenging and involved. It served a rewarding and valuable introduction to the profession, that I am very fortunate to have had.
Alistair Holland, Summer Clerk 2007
